Lungeing Equipment and Fit
Figure 16, (Harvey, 2003)
When lungeing a plain snaffle bridle fitted to the normal size of the particular horse should be used, the noseband should be removed in order for the cavesson to fit around the head. The reins should be twisted through the throat lash to prevent the horse from getting their leg caught, the handler may also decide to remove the reins completely however it does not matter either way. The cavesson should be one finger below the protruding cheek bone and tight enough so that it does not slip either side and affect the horse’s vision. Side-reins should be lengthened to ‘one fist’ away from the bit and clipped on under the reins, the leftover slack shouldn’t be thread entirely through the keepers, and this is so that they can be released quickly in an emergency. The horse can wear a saddle or a roller, if wearing a saddle the stirrups must be secured or removed. Brushing boots or exercise bandages must be worn on all four legs for maximum protection, if needed the horse should also wear overreach boots especially if the lungeing exercise requires the horse to jump. The handler should wear sturdy riding boots, a hard hat, and gloves all for protection of themselves. The handler should also carry a lunge whip to encourage the horse to work forwards if need to. The slideshow below shows some different fastenings that should be done to tack to ensure health and safety is revised;
1- Stirrups should be twisted and secured to stop them from flapping around
2- Reins should be twisted through throat lash to prevent horse from tripping over them.
3- Cavesson must be tight enough that it cannot move and block horses vision
4- Side reins should be attached as shown below
